Repricing and expanding Equipment Lists

Ok, for my next issue of Novus Secundus, I have decided to rework the pricing lists and expand upon them.

In another thread, I showed what the weapon repricing would look like and how I am changing armor for this issue (a lot of this is being done for my Anwyn setting, as I want a more semi-realistic economic system).

As such, I have taken medieval pricing (4 farthings = 1 pence, 12 pence = 1 shilling, 1 shilling equals 1 Pound), and converted it over to a 10:1 ratio that Novus 2e uses (so 1 farthing = 1 cp, 1 pence = 4 cp, 1 shilling = 48, etc...) and moved from there to reprice the equipment already on the lists and then to expand from there.....

Somethings already done....

Moved Clothing to its own list, basic clothing will be considered to be one material, and then you can use price multipliers for having it made in different materials (i.e. a fine linen shirt cost 3 times as much as a buckram/course linen shirt).

I have added a number of items to accessories. But what I am loking for is recommendations or ideas on the things you would like to see on an expanded equipment list (note: these lists are intended mainly for adventurers, although I do have must  much more that could be added for the Anwyn book.

just a few suggestions, assumed it fits in the setting (and I might have overlooked them):


- pick (or mining kit?)
- crowbar / chisel
.. a whole bunch of other tools for adventures (sewing kit, repair kit..)
- alchemist kit?
- grappling hook
- cosmetics
- sundial / clock
- compass / sextant
- cooking utensils (pots, pans, cutlery)
- Chain
- idol / portable shrine
- portable weighing scale


there are some very specific music instruments in a somewhat generalized list. Maybe group them
like small instrument, common (e. g. a flute, a drum), small instrument, fine/exquisite (e. g. harp, violine) and the same with "large"

And a shovel (although the Multi-tool does contain a shovel head) but definitely should add both)

Good one to add.

Sewing kit is a good idea. repair kit for what?

- alchemist kit?

This one would be more problematic as you really need at least a small lab worht's of equipment (alembics, beakers, distilling equipment, etc...). But I will look closer to see if a small travel kit might work (if I could figure out what might be in it).

- grappling hook

Cannot believe that is not on my list... Doh!

- cosmetics

For disguises?

- sundial / clock

I would nto consider these to be adventuring equipment, but I could possibly include a n hourglass  or perhaps one in smaller increments.

- compass / sextant

Sextants would be more for Sailing Ships. Same for the more accurate compasses. I can likely come up with a smaller verion for land navigation, but it would be on the expensive side (most folk just go with " I am facing the way the sun comes up, so North is to my left) heheheh

And both are actually expensive in meieval times, though if I figure in certain other races capabilities and ingenuity, I could like know the prices down a bit.

- cooking utensils (pots, pans, cutlery)

I have Camp Cookware on the list.

- Chain

Never thought of this as an adventuring tool or item, but I can add some.

- idol / portable shrine

That is an interesting idea that I had never thought of.......

- portable weighing scale

Hmmm... a small box containing a small balance and a set of weights (can be used for items up to 1 pound in weight) -- this might be doable (likely cost as much as good sword).

Yeah, I just might pull them out into their own list like I did with Clothing.

@hourglass oh yeah, would be useful, also.

@repair kit:
I imagine a hammer, a saw, a file for mantaining, repairing things like a broken cart wheel for example.
But this way you'll find no end in adding items. That's why I really like the "kit" approach in Traveller, you have a lot of kits for certain skills, oftentimes they make actions easier, other times they're necessary to even try things.

@alchemy:
Mortar and pestle would definitely be in a "alchemist's kit". Another one would be a distilling device. Here is a mobile made of copper I once saw in the apothecarie's museum in Heidelberg (Germany) https://bawue.museum-digital.de/index.php?t=objekt&oges=1800
you could put it in a oven (immobile) or just a bigger pot filled with water (basically everywhere at a campfire).
So it's possible but as mentioned above different "kits" would do fine, imho.

I just ask why my players always semm to bother me with this alchemy, even in games where there is not place for it in player hands (like D&D).

@cosmetics:
Disguises? Why not? but somethimes when attending certain events a certain kind of player sets great value on appearances (just like there a different qualities of clothing in Novus). Personally, I don't mind

@mobile shrines / idols were pretty common in ancient up to early medieval times where I like to set my campaigns in. People often made litte firing offerings (correct term?!) on journeys (aka Adventures ;-) ). This was before people had to attend to churches every other day.

heheheh...I am sure that there are uses that could be done.  It would depend on how much extra weight adventurers are willing to carry around...

And yes, while there are clocks in Anwyn,  I am aiming for this to be more of an adventure's list of items (covering different types of adventurers where possible). There are definitely a LOT more items I could add, but I also don't want to overwhelm players with too many options that they might never use either. Again, it boils down to striking a balance and I know that I will always miss SOMETHING.... :)

Ah, something like a Carter's Repair Kit (contains tools and stuff for fixing carts and wagons), And good point (about kits in general) too...

That is so cool!!! I had never seen anything like that. Not the best quality it seems, but it allowed for working at least a bit...

ROFL  I once upon a time (many many years ago) had an item that allowed me to open a door to a 10'x10'  other dimensional room (i.e. a portable safe space of sorts), which I had outfitted as an alchemist's lab, so I could go in and work on things for 8 hours at a time.. heheh

Disguise Kit needs to be added, and then I can just add a "Cosmetics kit" as well -- enough for say 3 applications

Not sure on the correct term, but I think I understand what you mean (i.e. they burn offerings), but good point (it could likely be two main items in a small box -- 1 idol, 1  hearth (a small tile or plate on which offerings are burnt), usage -- pull out items, set idol/symbol on top of box, with tile in front, and then say prayers while burning offering...
