Anwyn Calendar & Weather System
« on: February 08, 2021, 11:41:12 PM »
Ok, have spent most of the weekend working on a Calender and Weather System for Anwyn.

Calendar

A Year is 360 days long

A Year contains 12 months

A Month contains 30 days

A Week is 7 days

The days of the week are:

  • Solsday
  • Cerrsday
  • Tyrsday
  • Wodensday
  • Kersday
  • Ogsday
  • Belsday

The days are named after the gods (yes, I have reworked the gods a bit too).

The months are as follows (with their real word equivalents -- the Anwyn year starts in Haomi):

  • Haomi (December)
  • Daomi (January)
  • Atrimi (February)
  • Ceathmi (March)
  • Cuigmi (April)
  • Asemi (May)
  • Sechtmi (June)
  • Hochmi (July)
  • Anaomi (August)
  • Adeimi (September)
  • Hademi (October)
  • Dodhemi (November)

Weather System

The Weather system consists of 3 tables, the first 2 tables have columns for 6 months each.

They both have rows for

  • Base Temp - the average temperature for the month.
  • Daily High Adjustment -- a roll to see how far above that average the daily temp will get.
  • Daily Low Adjustment -- how far below the average that the temp will get on that day.
  • Sky - This section has 4 rows
    • Clear - no or very few clouds
    • Partly Cloudy - up to 50% cloud cover
    • Mostly Cloudy - Up to 100% cloud cover
    • Overcast - 100% cloud cover, very dark clouds (dark enough for undead who are susceptible to daylight can move about for short periods of time -- Ilthach is often overcast...)
  • Chance of Precipitation - what is the chance of rain, sleet, snow, etc. (I will still have to create Precipitation Tables)

The third table gives the major areas of Anwyn, plus Wraithwod, Brackenmire, Low Mountains, and High Mountains and adjustments to the Base Temperature, Cloud cover, Precipitation, and wind speeds.

I have also been working on files to use this Weather system in an app called Tablesmith -- http://www.mythosa.net/p/tablesmith.html

The app itself is free, but it has a nag screen that comes up every so often. Registering it ($10 USD) lets you register it and get rid of that nag screen.

so far, this is what my Tablesmith output looks like

That's excellent.

Why not use a 6-day week ? It fits better with the 12-based calendar and makes it 5 weeks a month. Each mont then begin with the same day giving easy calendar mark (the third Solsday of Cuigmi for example).

I would consider dropping the "day" at the end of each day's name or the "mi" at the end of each month just to avoid the repetition. I am aware that it's a familiar feature in most languages I know to name days (-day in English, -tag in German and -di in French) but not for months.

Last point to be my annoying self, I was not aware that Fahrenheits were still in use anywhere today! More seriously, I know that in the US imperial system still prevail over metric system but some RPGs now commonly use metric system. Have you decided about what you will use? A specifically-designed system maybe? It could be fun to develop the 12-based mechanics (12 months a year, 12 hours a day, 12 inches a foot ( :-), 12 feet a pole...).

the "mi" is actually part of old irish and means month.

7 days a week allows for familarity. and months are based on the lunar cycle (i.e. New Moon on first and last day of month

Changing to Celsius..... um.. I am not as comfortable using celsius, and I don't really use it all that much in Novus (as a secondary to the Farenheit).

The tables are done in Farenheit and converting them would actually mess up the dice mechanics as they would produce too wide a variance.

and of course, now that I have a weather system, I am working on changing it.... ROFL....

For example, instead of going for specific temperatures  (this is not Rolemaster afterall, no need for that level of specificity), the Temperature table will look like this

:Temp
1-5,Freezing
6-10,Cold
11-15,Cool
16-20,Mild
21-25,Warm
26-30,Hot

it will be a 2d10 roll with mods for season and for location.

For example the base line is for early spring, so +1 to the roll for late spring,+2 for summer, -1 for fall, -2 for winter.

Then mods for location, Tuist Rhion (the star crater) would get a +3 modifier for temp due to underlying geo-thermal features.

the table for cloudiness would be like

:Sky
1-7,clear (up to 10% cloud cover)
8-18,cloudy (between 10% and 100% cloud cover, each point above 8 equals 10% cloud cover)
19-30,overcast (more than 100% cloud cover, the sky is dark enough that undead who are suceptible to daylight may go out in it)

Ilthach gets a +8 to its cloud cover due to its connection to the Ocher Realms.

And so forth....

Each temp listing would have its own precipitation table as well (and you only roll on them if the sky is cloudy or overcast).

I will try to put it together into something that I can give you guys (a small PDF maybe) this weekend.
