Title: Combat Styles question
Post by: Rasyr on October 07, 2020, 08:06:16 PM
It just occurred to me that Combat Styles, the top 2 tiers, at least are going to be very hard to achieve, simply because of how much XP you need to get the required number of ranks in the Lore skill.

Remember, you can have a max of 1 rank for every 20 XP (or portion thereof), so a starting character (100 XP) can have a total of 5 ranks.

in the rules, you need 6 ranks for Tier 3, 10 ranks for tier 4 and 15 ranks for tier 5 (the progression was 1+2+3+4+5 to give the total number of ranks needed).

so to get tier 5, you would need a minimum of 281 XP.

101-120 == 6 ranks ==Tier 3
121-140 == 7 ranks
141-160 == 8 ranks
161-180 == 9 ranks
181-200 == 10 ranks == Tier 4
201-220 == 11 ranks
221-240 == 12 ranks
241-260 == 13 ranks
261-280 == 14 ranks
281-300 == 15 ranks == Tier 5

Is that too much?

One alternative would be to require 2 ranks in Lore skill for every Tier of a Style. If I go this route, a character would need 10 ranks (minimum of 181 XP total -- or 81 XP from start of play That would mean a maximu of 81 sessions to get to that point, the minimum, if we presume an average of 5 CP awarded per session, would be 16 sessions.

Currently, to get Tier 5 would require a maximum of 181 sessions, or a minimum of 36 sessions

In fact, I am now thinking of putting a recommended cap of 5 CP per session, EXCEPT for the conclusion of an Adventure (where they get that +5 CP bonus if they successfully complete it).

Thoughts? Comments?

Have gone ahead to changed it 2 ranks or lore skill required per Tier.

A late thought: why not allow specific style-users to rely on different stats than the default one. For example, a style could allow to wield a sword using Dex or Str instead of Spd.
It would make a good incentive to adapt weapon use to races and stats.
