Anyone familiar with the updated version of HARP?
Just curious if you've read it and what you think of it.
Thanks!

Sorry, but I haven't looked at it -- other than a cursory glance at some sample pages -- and from an asthetic viewpoint regarding the look of the book, I really don't like it. There were numerous font/style choices that I found jarring or unpleasing, at least to my eye.
As for the content, I don't know the full extent of the changes made, but I do know that the biggest error that I made when authoring HARP was not corrected, and it still exists within the product, and was even carried over into HARP Sci-Fi.
-
And do I have to buy HARP to find out what that "error" is? ???

When I was first writing HARP, I used attack/critical tables similar to those from MERP (and later on in RMX). And then it was decided to do away with the attack tables.
Unfortunately, when I did that, I missed the fact that those table had an automatic DB component (i.e. that is why damage didn't begin at 1, but usually much further up the line (30-70 in most cases)) beyond the normal effects of DB.
The end result is that combat is a hell of a lot deadlier than was originally intended....

Well...that may be problem!
PS- just curious...do you get any royalties from the new one?
-
Also, today I joined the ICE forum to ask some questions on HARP and saw this thread, which has people posting that they find HARP combat not deadly enough:

PS- and finally noticed I had "udpated" instead of "updated" as the topic...oops!

I always thought that characters in HARP were pretty durable since they had a good many endurance points. I guess you could house rule some things to make up for the problem you mentioned Tim.

oh, once I realized the problem, I created options to fix it, but I am not sure how often they got used.
