Title: What is the Novus Engine?
Post by: imported_Witchking20k on December 19, 2013, 03:23:58 PM
So,

After a long hiatus I have been playing/running Novus again.  As such I ahve been trying to catch up on the Forums readings; I consistently hear (read) people commenting on how much they enjoy the "Novus Engine.  So, I am curious; what is the Novus Engine to you? Is it the dice rolling?  The Boons/Snags?  Spells?

Yeah, we had one poster on here before who referred to Novus as the "Novus Engine", and just this morning, I got notified of a review on DriveThruRPG ( http://rpg.drivethrustuff.com/product_reviews.php?products_id=87903 ) and that review also used the term "Novus Engine".

Personally, I have never actually used that term myself, but I do know of other games that have. And in most of those other games, it essentially refers for the core mechanics of the system.

So, for me, if I were to describe the Novus Engine, I would include the following as being part of it:

To me, that is the innermost core of the system. Some elements that I consider important, but which can be tweaked in a variety of ways include:

And no, I would not be surprised (or offended) if others had differing opinions. Part of the design philosophy behind Novus was a recognition that different GMs have different styles and want different things out of the game. Therefore, it should be and is not any surprise that different people see it as different things.

I never would of thought of asking this question myself, but since it has been asked, I would like to see how folks answer it. I find it (and the potential answers) very interesting.

To me the Engine is the Explosive/Implosive Dice Rolling, the Fate Points, the Snag/Boons and the Spell Casting are the engine- you could change the stats, play without skills & classes, and use a partial success vs. all or nothing resolution and it would still feel like Novus...

I think that Novus core is the resolution system:
- non linear 2d10
- imploding / exploding dice
- Snags and Boons (the player choose the outcome)

All the rest his "optional", can be or has already been amended, ignored or modified. I was thinking of tagging the skill system as core, but it can be easily and massively tweaked to accommodate different styles of play or settings. Futuristic settings will have different skill sets than current Novus but will still be Novus.

I agree- its the dice rolling in combination with the snags and boons that seem to make Novus different from other games.
