So- I would like to introduce a "tech" skill into my game. Any ideas? I know I want it to function like Magecraft in that it's one skill but has several specific sub-skills......
-
How advanced of technology are you planning? Fax machines and CD players? Force fields and antimatter drives?
-
It's actually to represent pre war of dominion Shadow World. So, I am kind of envisioning something like Magecraft with the sub skills of Computers, Mechanics and Electronics?
-
That should work well, perhaps pull something like the "tech levels" as well, since computers at one tech level might differ from those at a higher one.
-
Hmmmm....food for thought. I had also considered making it a Talent rather than adding a skill.
-
I would recommend sticking with a skill.
Just off the top of my head, if you check out the Spacemaster Tech Levels, you could use that as your base Tech skill (treat as a related skill for up to tech level below, and one level above), and then have the subskills for each specialty.
Then the base skill would be all about general operation of things from that tech level, and then specialties would be for more indepth (i.e. Tech (Lvl4 = now), and Tech:Programming would involve how to program computer, while Tech: Computers would allow for repairing them.).

Yes! I had thought of something similar. Currently I am using this as a guideline (based on playing a K'Ti"viri during the War of Dominion):
NEW SKILL: Mage-Tech (INT)
The base skill functions exactly like Magecraft except that it is intended to apply to technology fueled by the Essence. Like Magecraft, Mage-Tech has 4 separate subskills; Computer, Electronics, Mechanics, and Engineering. These allow you to interact with those 4 elements of technology. To create or manipulate technology you would have to develop a corresponding Lore Skill for the appropriate Tech-Discipline.
What I hadn't thought of was using the Tech Levels +/-1 as guidelines. Super easy. I'll write this into Shattered Moon too.

I would make it kinda like a combined thing....
using the Tech levels as the base skill, allowing for some cross-over up and down a level. They get half bonus for everything, and if they have specialties, they get to use full bonus for that specialty (it is not a seperate skill
