Announcements / Express Additions #3 Released!
« Last post by Rasyr on January 26, 2025, 12:35:29 PM »

Welcome to the third issue of Express Additions. As always, our primary goal here is to expand the core rules of Fantasy Express with options and/or additional material that we could not fit into the core rules, or that we did not think of before publishing the core rules.

In this issue, we are presenting you with some new Vocational Kits. First up, we have the new Hybrids, the Mage Hunter and the Shadowkin. And then we have the Elemental Guards. This is actually a group 9 new Vocational Kits that are classified as Channelers.

We follow that up with a new Milestone and some new Gifts that go with our Channelers. And then we present the spells for our two new Hybrids Kits.

And we round out this issue with a new Weapon Quality and some new weapons as well.

The ones in parenthesis are Hybrids that might be placed in other Schools...

Fantasy Express / New Schools of Magic....
« Last post by Rasyr on January 23, 2025, 12:42:49 PM »
In Express Additions #3 I was already planning on adidng the Shadowkin....

I was  originally thinking of making him be from the  School of Mysticism, when I had  a thought.....

I was already wanting to add an Astrologer type spell user and did not feel that his spells truly suited any other  School, but didn't want to add just a single School.... (it  would make  my Wheel of Magic lopsided hehe)

Then  this morning, I had a  thought, If I  put Astromancy (for the Astrologer) between Spiritism and Divinism, then I could puta new School between Diabolism and Mysticism. I could call it Umbramancy

Astromancy = magic involving the heavens and  the stars and such
Umbramancy = magic involving darkness and shadows... (and I have  some neat spell ideas for it...)

Of course, this  will require 3 new Vocational Kits (which will not be released until  until EA#4) along with 48 new spells (plus  the 12 fromthe  Shadowkin for 60 spells overall....

I have also added Notes to the Mage Hunter and Shadowkin that they could also be placed under other Schools of Magic if a  GM desires (Mage Hunter could be Sorcery, Magery, or Wizardry depending on how he  is defined)

You have reminded me of the list of character types I loved in the old The Compleat Adventurer, The Complete Spellcaster, etc. from Bard Games. :)

The "Compleat" series later became a game called Arcanum, and the 30th Anniversary edition of that game was released under Creative Commons and was a huge source  of  inspiration for Fantasy Express. Many of the original character classes  from there were translated into various Vocational Kits (and many of their spells were  rewritten to be scalable spells in Fantasy Express (this is  why  Arcanum is listed in the Credits for Fantasy Express

Can "Linguist" be used to improve "Animal" languages?

I would not think so but what's the official answer?

The way that Linguist is envisioned is that you gain those ranks in languages that are learnable for your character. That  is 2 free ranks of Spoken in 3 additional languages (i.e. languages you do not know, but are capable of learning/speaking).

So, if the  character ALSO has the Major version of the Gift, Animal Speech, then yes, Linguist could be used  to give him 2 ranks in each of 3 new Animal Tongues (it would  not apply  to the Animal Tongue gained in  the Minor  version of  the Gift since that only gives 1 Animal Tongue, and not the ability to learn the others).

Since the Animal Tongues do not have Written versions, that benefit of the Major version of Linguist would be lost.
