Favourite Caveat: This is a read through not play review.

Fantasy Express (FX) offers a thoughtfully designed tabletop RPG system, emphasising smooth, flexible mechanics that support both detailed customisation and streamlined gameplay. Central to FX is an intuitive 2d10 dice mechanic, providing quick resolution with clearly defined outcomes, which keeps the narrative flowing smoothly.

Character creation is robust and versatile, enabling players to combine two Vocational Kits to create unique, multi-dimensional characters. This dual-kit system grants substantial freedom to customise abilities, skills, and play styles precisely, ensuring that no two characters feel identical.

The skill system is comprehensive yet accessible, organised thoughtfully to allow easy reference and intuitive gameplay. This clarity empowers players to use their skills creatively, enhancing strategic depth and making gameplay both engaging and rewarding.

Combat mechanics blend tactical decision-making with narrative excitement. Players actively choose special effects based on their combat rolls, transforming each encounter into a dynamic, cinematic event. This approach ensures battles remain tactically rich without becoming overly complex.

Magic in FX is expansive and adaptable, featuring multiple Schools of Magic and a diverse range of spells seamlessly integrated into the core mechanics. The system prioritises flexibility, allowing spellcasters to shape their magical abilities uniquely, significantly contributing to character individuality and strategic gameplay.

GM resources are extensive and practical, offering comprehensive tools such as clear encounter guidelines, well-organised bestiaries, and helpful tips for managing sessions smoothly. These resources significantly simplify game preparation and execution, enhancing the overall experience.

Pros and Cons

Pros: • Flexible and intuitive core mechanics. • Extensive customisation through Vocational Kits. • Tactical, cinematic combat. • Comprehensive magic system. • Exceptional GM tools and resources.

Cons: • Initial learning curve for newcomers. • Potential complexity for players accustomed to simpler systems. • Requires GM familiarity with detailed mechanics.

Overall Assessment

Fantasy Express excels as a robust, flexible RPG system ideal for players and groups who appreciate strategic depth and customisable mechanics. Its thoughtful design ensures engaging gameplay that is approachable for experienced gamers and richly rewarding for those seeking detailed character and combat options.
